Why is this project needed?
Without a runway that meets the current standards, we would not be able to operate. To ensure we retain and attract future air service we must rehabilitate the runway.
How much will the runway rehabilitation project cost?
The total cost of the Meadows Field Airport runway rehabilitation project is $49 million. The funds to pay for the project were obtained through a federal grant.
Phase 1: $18 million investment will go towards removing 12 taxiways and condensing them to seven or eight taxiways.
Phase 2: $16 million will go towards securing 3,000 feet of runway and replacing all lighting on the runway.
Phase 3: $13.4 million will go towards crowning the runway.
Where is the money for the runway rehabilitation project coming from?
The money used to fund the Meadows Field Airport runway rehabilitation project all came from FAA grants, discretionary and entitlements funds, and not local taxpayer dollars.
When is the construction expected to be done?
We anticipate the entire runway rehabilitation project to be complete by November 2018. Construction will be done in three phases:
Phase 1: April 2016 – November 2016
Phase 2: April 2017 – November 2017
Phase 3: April 2018 – November 2018
How will our community benefit from the runway rehabilitation project?
The runway at Meadows Field Airport is nearing its useful life and therefore needs to be rehabilitated so it’s useful for another 40 years. This project is beneficial to the community because without the runway, we would not be able to retain and attract future air service. Meadows Field Airport contributes $158 million of economic benefit to the community each year, and this project ensures the economic impact of the Airport will continue for another 40 years.
How does the Airport benefit from the runway rehabilitation project?
By rehabilitating the runway, the Meadows Field Airport will have a runway that will be useful for another 40 years. The runway will allow us to retain and continue attracting future air service. Without a runway that meets the current standards, we would not be able to operate and a very important economic driver within the community is lost.
What does this project mean to our community?
By rehabilitating the runway, Meadows Field Airport will continue to support 1,100 jobs for people working in Kern County and the aviation industry.
What environmental effects or disruption will the construction have on our community?
We understand construction can be an unwelcome nuisance. We anticipate very little environmental impact or disruption to from the project. There will be increased truck traffic coming to and from the Airport via Airport Drive.
Is the Meadows Field Airport safe to fly in and out from?
Yes, the Meadows Field Airport is safe for all to fly in and out of. The safety and security of our passengers is of paramount concern. This project is to rehabilitate the runway so it will be viable for another 40 years.
